If you're chancing upon this page before the show has aired.. I strongly reccomend you read the following page, it is one of the best articles I have ever read, explaining a subject we will be discussing tomorrow in depth.
Go to Imperfect Sound Forever.
----
Well the show went really well, thanks to all who emailed in their opinions and comments: it really helps the hour flow (and keeps me happy!)
Listening back to the show I was dissapointed, but not surprised, to find that CUR1350 does strongly compress the music before sending it out; the second track I played should actually be much quiter in the quiet passages and much louder in the loud passages.
Hopefully none of you were too confused by some of the technical terms I may have (mis-)used, or by the variety of points raised. Here are some more links about the loudness war and compression. Most of these come from Wikipedia anyway, but they are all worth reading, and Wikipedia has many more good links to check out.
Honestly, the Imperfect Sound Forever article is the best, and helped inspire 'The Destruction of Small Ideals'.
A brilliant Youtube explanation of the loudness war.
Over the Limit is a bit more visual and has some numerical data to back up the facts.
More numerical data and pictures, along with a downloadable program and a hall of fame and shame from CuteStudio Ltd.
The Future of Music explains how historically the loudness war came about with the advent of CDs.
Declaring an end to the loudness wars is a slightly shorter article.
What Happened To Dynamic Range? is an article not written by a fan complaining, but by a mastering engineer himself.
Like I said, all very interesting, but borderline pointless because of the compression and low bitrates that the following recording has gone through...
There's More To Music 07/05/2008 show recording
The show is completely unedited, sadly I had to cut off the end of Parenthood. The noise track is there in full...
Here's the tracklist (artist - title):
Queens of the Stone Age - Go With The Flow
65daysofstatic - Music Is Music as Devices Are Kisses Is Everything
Iggy Pop & The Stooges - Raw Power
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow
Beirut - Nantes
Prurient - Apple Tree Victim
Justice - DVNO
kid606 - Parenthood
Erik Satie - Gymnopédie III [La troisième gymnopédie]
If you have any more opinions on anything discussed this show don't hesitate to leave a comment, or send me an email during the next show. Enjoy!
